The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was passed in 1990, it states that various institutions cannot discriminate against those that are physically or mentally disabled. These institutions include: schools, transportation systems, jobs, and all private/public places. This grants any disabled individual the ability to receive equal opportunities in different forms of public life.

Divided into five titles, the ADA covers:

  • Title I – Employment – Employers must accommodate any qualified individual as to properly allow them to perform the functions required in their field of work.
  • Title II – State & Local Government – All state & local government services must accommodate disabled individuals, this includes all services that are federally funded. An example would be public transportation.
  • Title III – Public Accommodations – Any commercial or public accommodations must adhered to the given standard as to be accessible to disabled individuals. Examples of accommodations include hotels, restaurants, event centers, and retail merchants.
  • Title IV – Telecommunications – Requires all internet and telephone companies to have telecommunication relay services for all individuals with hearing/speech disabilities. This also includes closed captioning for federally funded service announcements.
  • Title V – Miscellaneous Provisions – This covers a list of various points that concern disabled individuals when dealing with: attorney fees, state immunity, insurance, drugs, and retaliation/coercion. As well as the ADA’s relationship to other laws. This title also details what cannot be considered a disability.

In addition, these titles are governed by different governmental entities, such as: the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), and the Federal Trade Commission (FCC).
